Recording Tips for Video Content

The video quality of uploaded content significantly impacts how well your offerings are received, from the number of plays to the ratings and reviews each track gains.

It is worth taking the time to ensure that your videos are clear, steady, and professionally presented. Remember that people using Insight Timer are often meditating, practicing yoga, engaging in breathwork, or exploring tools to support their mental well-being. Distracting visuals, poor lighting, unstable framing, or unclear audio can interrupt the experience.

Uploaded video content should maintain authenticity and genuineness, reflecting the teacher’s presence and voice. Please do not use AI-generated avatars or AI-generated narration in place of your own presence.

We understand that not everyone may have access to a professional studio setup. Below are recommendations to help you achieve high-quality video recordings from home.

FIND A CALM, QUIET SPACE

  • Choose a clean, quiet environment that aligns with the tone of your practice.
  • Record in a tidy, uncluttered space.
  • Avoid busy backgrounds, harsh patterns, or distracting movement.
  • Reduce background noise as much as possible (fans, traffic, appliances).
  • For movement-based practices (yoga, qigong, tai chi), ensure you have enough space to move freely and remain fully visible within the frame.

PRIORITIZE CLEAR AUDIO

  • Audio quality is just as important in video as it is in audio-only tracks.
  • Use a headset microphone or a lavalier (clip-on) microphone whenever possible.
  • Avoid relying solely on your device’s built-in microphone.
  • Record a short test clip and listen back before beginning your session.
  • Your voice should be clear, warm, and free of echo or distortion.

USE SOFT, NATURAL LIGHTING

  • Good lighting makes a significant difference in the overall professionalism of your video.
  • Face a window for natural light when possible.
  • If recording indoors at night, use a soft lamp or ring light positioned in front of you.
  • Avoid strong backlighting (e.g., bright windows directly behind you).
  • Avoid overhead-only lighting that creates shadows.
  • Lighting should feel soft and calming — not harsh or theatrical.

KEEP THE CAMERA STEADY AND WELL-FRAMED

  • Position your camera at eye level (or slightly above).
  • Use a tripod or a stable surface to prevent shaking.
  • Frame yourself clearly and leave enough space around you.
  • For movement practices, ensure your full body remains in view throughout.
  • Avoid frequent zooming, excessive camera movement, or multiple angles unless truly necessary.

KEEP EDITING SIMPLE AND MINIMAL

Insight Timer is a space for contemplation and presence. Video content should feel grounded and easy to follow.

We recommend:

  • One continuous recording whenever possible.
  • Minimal cuts or transitions.
  • Simple titles only if necessary.

Please avoid:

  • Flashy transitions
  • Fast jump cuts
  • Animated overlays or visual effects
  • Loud intro/outro graphics
  • The focus should remain on the practice — not production effects.

BACKGROUND MUSIC IN VIDEO

You may include background music if it enhances the experience.

  • Keep the music at a subtle level.
  • Ensure your voice remains clearly audible.
  • Maintain consistent volume throughout the video.

Please ensure you hold the copyright or proper license for any music used. You may refer to available royalty-free music sources if needed.
